The Coveted “Being in the Lead as the Chase for the Nextel Cup Begins Cup.”

(September 2004)  On a Focus on Racing Radio national broadcast just before it began, Jeff Gordon commented that it feels good to be in the points lead as the Chase for the Nextel Cup begins … “but, it’s not like you get a trophy or anything.”

Ron Martin detected a note of disappointment in Jeff’s voice so he took it upon himself to solve the problem. Ron went to his attic and chopped up his cherished old bowling trophy, he then found a nice cup in his grandmother’s old china closet — and the problem was solved.

Here Jeff shows off the trophy and cup in New Hampshire, marking yet another cornerstone in his career.
